Mac St News - Friday 9th August 2024

Principals Report

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,

It has been a wonderful fortnight at Macarthur Street, it’s hard to believe that we are nearing the midpoint of Term 3!

It was fantastic to see all our 100-day old students in dress up to celebrate the big milestone for our Foundation students. They have all grown both physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually during their first 100 days. We can’t wait to see how they grow in the next 100!

Parent/Carer/Guardian Opinion Survey
I would like to say thank you to the families that have completed the Parent/Carer/Guardian Survey so far. The survey is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, and student engagement. The survey is optional, but we encourage and appreciate your participation.

Our school will use the survey results to assist in identifying areas for improvement and professional development needs in the school, to target school planning and improvement strategies. The survey only takes 20 minutes to complete and can be accessed at any convenient time on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones, all details have been posted on Compass.

Foundation 2025 Enrolments
We have had a positive number of enrolments coming in for the 2025 school year. If you or anyone you know has a 2025 Foundation aged child, please contact the school to organise a tour, enrolment paperwork and further information about transition.

Toward the end of Term 3 and during Term 4 we will have visits from Soldiers Hill Kinder, our Grade 6 students will take them for library lessons, exploring the yard and learning all about school. We are looking forward to seeing the kinder students visiting us.

School Uniform
As the weather is still quite cold, we want to see students wearing correct and appropriate clothing for the Ballarat weather. We want our students at school as much as possible and want to avoid any unnecessary days off from illness. We have plenty of beanies for sale at the office if any student or family member would like to purchase one.

Have a great weekend.

Foundation News - Mrs Emily Burns

In Reading, students have been learning and building knowledge of ‘two letters make one sound’, in particular the /ck/ spelling. We have been reading a decodable text using this spelling in class for students to apply their understanding.

In Writing, our little cherubs are absolute superstars, learning about verbs and creating sentences using a who, what, where and when. Just a reminder can students please bring a drink bottle to school with them if possible.

Our room is nice and warm, but it can be an interruption to learning when students need to leave to get a drink. Have a great rest of the week!

Grade 1/2 News - Miss Rhiannon Eustice

Week 2 of Term 3 and Grade 1/2's are well and truly back into it. This term our knowledge unit is on geography.

The students are learning all about Australia and where it is in the world. To spice things up, the class are filming a news segment across the term visiting each state and territory.

This week we starting filming and our news anchors Kadison and Summer did great reading their script...

Watch this space as we will have something special to share at the end of term!

Grade 5/6 News - Mrs Sharon Smith-Francis

Grade 5/6S are exploring the five oceans—Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Arctic.

They are enjoying embarking on a grand voyage across the planet’s vast water world.

Each ocean is a point of wonder, rich with its unique features and intriguing secrets that capture the interest of the students.

AUSLAN NEWS – Mrs Bonnie Irving

This fortnight our Grade 1-6 students have been learning about how to sign colours in Auslan. They have also been working on their conversational skills.

We practiced signing to others “What is your name?” and “My name is”. Interestingly we learned that when signing you do not need to say all of the words and sometimes the phrases are out of order. For example to ask “What is you name?” we sign “Your name what?” and “My name is” becomes “My name”.

Our Foundation students have been continuing their knowledge of feelings as well as beginning to learn how to fingerspell the letters of the alphabet.

2024 Book Week

Book Week is coming! This year’s theme is ‘Reading is Magic’, and here at the Mac St library, we wholeheartedly agree!

To celebrate the magic of books, students are invited to dress up as their favourite book character on Friday August 23.

Costumes don’t have to be fancy or complicated: consider making a simple headpiece out of coloured card (animal ears! A crown! A top hat!), making a cape, or carrying a prop such as a magic wand or plushie.

Happy reading, everyone!

Students birthday

Happy Birthday to the following students who have celebrated their birthday over the holidays or will celebrate it in the coming days.
