Literacy

Teaching & Learning

At Macarthur Street Primary School, we highly value Reading and Writing.

Our philosophy to instruction is informed by current research and evidence informed best practice from the Science of Reading and Learning and follows a structured Literacy approach.

During our Literacy time students participate in a systematic synthetic phonics program called Sounds-Write, which teaches reading through sound to letter correspondences.

We have adopted a knowledge rich curriculum which underpins all our Literacy instruction. Students are fuelled with knowledge and vocabulary from our chosen texts and are then asked to respond in their writing. This knowledge framework is on a two-year cycle and includes units from History, Geography and Science.

Students in the upper year levels will also participate in novel studies, where students take a deep dive into sentence structure, authors meaning and character development.
