Mac St News - Friday 15 November 2024
Principals Report
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
We have now arrived at the midpoint of Term 4; the year and term has well and truly flown by.
The last fortnight has been extremely busy, all classrooms and students have been completing assessment and it has been wonderful to see such amazing growth from students in all aspects of the curriculum.
This year we have made some significant shifts in our Teaching and Learning practice. Staff and students should be commended on how well they have adapted to this new approach. I would like to thank all parents and carers for reassuring the students about assessment time. This can be a stressful time for some students, but we like to view this as a chance to celebrate what has been learnt of the duration of the year.
Transition
Our Grade 6 students have visited Soldiers Hill Kinder and met some of the new faces that will be coming to our school next year. We have also had a Foundation Parent/Carer information night. It was wonderful to have so many new families coming into our school. In 2025, we will have 17 new families and students beginning their learning journey here with us at Macarthur Street. We are excited for the upcoming transition sessions and having our new students familiarise themselves with the school.
School Saving Bonus
The Victorian Government is delivering the School Saving Bonus – a one-off $400 support for government school students from Prep to Year 12 in 2025. From Tuesday 26 November 2024, you will receive an email from the Department of Education with your unique $400 School Saving Bonus code. The School Saving Bonus will help families cover the cost of uniforms, excursions, activities and more. If you have multiple children enrolled in Victorian government schools for 2025, you will receive one School Saving Bonus code email per child. These emails might arrive on different days. Please make sure to check your spam/junk email folder. Parents and carers can use the School Saving Bonus code in store at school-nominated suppliers. Parents and carers can also choose to access the School Saving Bonus online system, where they can allocate part or all the $400 bonus to use at school nominated-online suppliers or for school activities. To learn more about the School Saving Bonus, visit School Saving Bonus | vic.gov.au (www.vic.gov.au). A step-by-step user guide will be available on the webpage on 26 November. If you have not received your School Saving Bonus code via email by Friday 29 November, please contact the Department of Education by emailing
Term 4
For the remaining weeks of school, there is still plenty occurring here at school. It is imperative that our students are as much as possible. They will be finalising rehearsals for concert and camp, continuing learning and preparing for transition as well as enjoying the fun activities that will occur in the final weeks.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Foundation News - Mrs Emily Burns
The last two weeks have been absolutely wonderful in the Foundation classroom with assessment taking place. The data that I am seeing is very pleasing and makes me so proud of our lovely little cherubs.
In Core Knowledge, we have been learning about the sun as a planet in our solar system. The discussions and questions that students are having and asking about the learning shows just how much knowledge they know and want to know about the world that we live in. Students practiced using a graphic organizer to write down all the facts they know about the sun.
Grade 1/2 News - Miss Rhiannon Eustice
Space Flip Book Project
Grade 1/2's have had a busy last 2 weeks with assessment. As the testing period draws to an end students should be celebrating all the progress they have made across the year, not only in academic achievements, but in their social and emotional awareness as well.
In class, students have also been working independently on creating their Outer Space Flip Books. In them, students have included some facts about the sun, moon and planets that they've learnt about so far this term. It's great to see what information they have retained in such a short amount of time.
Grade 3/4 News - Mr Andrew Goodson
Over the past couple of weeks, the 3/4 class has engaged in a couple rich learning experiences based around the topic of Space.
The first was on Monday night of last week when we paid a visit to the Ballarat Observatory. Whilst there, we had a look at a couple of telescopes, learnt about planets and other objects in our solar system, and then used a telescope to look at the moon (fortunately the clouds had cleared by the time it was dark).
Furthermore, people from the VSSEC came to our school to teach us more about space. In the first session, we built a rocket which we later filled with water and air and released into the sky (some went further and higher than others). After this, we learnt about the distance between the planets and their distance from the Sun.
Both of these experiences were engaging and informative.
Grade 5/6 News - Mrs Sharon Smith-Francis
Selected Grade 6 students did a wonderful job at the Remembrance Day Ceremony, last Monday at the Gallipoli Oak Tree, here at school. It was great to hear them present their readings in such a respectful and responsible manner. Remembrance Day is an important occasion to honour the sacrifices made by soldiers, and it’s inspiring to see young students engaging in this tradition with such care.
Well done Grade 6’s! You should be all very proud of yourselves.
AUSLAN NEWS – Mrs Bonnie Irving
We are edging closer to the end of Term 4, however Auslan is showing no signs of slowing. The last fortnight has seen us exploring the names for different family members. Everyone had the opportunity to draw a picture of their own family and glue on the matching Auslan signs.
This week we explored the sign names for Australian animals, some of the signs are just as cute as the animals themselves. We then used some of our artistic skills to draw our favourite Australian animals and then match these with the Auslan sign.
2025 Book List Cost – Payment Due 19/12/2024
In 2025 we will be obtaining our student stationery packs from KaKa Kids, payment is now required to school (via QKR app) by 19/12/2024. Individually named stationery packs will be delivered to your child’s classroom before the start of the 2025 school year. All stationery items are carefully selected by the teachers for their suitability for your child’s use during their year of studies.
We ask the ALL families purchase their Book Pack from the school, so all students have the same stationery items. This method is more equitable and easier for parents/carers.
