Principals Report

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,

Welcome back to school for the 2025 school year! I hope everyone had a relaxing break and is now rejuvenated for the exciting year ahead.

The school year has commenced smoothly. All five of our classrooms participated in a three-day Ready to Learn curriculum, which introduced students to the structures and routines necessary for achieving their best learning outcomes. Our students demonstrated immense commitment to this initiative, making it one of the strongest starts to a school year I have witnessed. Each student has taken home a social story to read with their family about their classroom and school—we hope you enjoy sharing this with your child.

This year, we begin with 81 students across five classrooms. A large percentage of these are our new Foundation students, who have settled seamlessly into the rigors of primary school life. They bring great joy to staff and students alike as they smile, play, and laugh their way through the school day.

Staffing Update
During the holiday period, Mrs. Sharon Smith-Francis accepted a position at Alfredton Primary School. Mrs. Seff has been a valued staff member at Macarthur Street for 17 years, playing an integral role in the development of hundreds of students. She will be missed immensely, and we know all students hold fond memories of her. We wish her all the best on her next educational adventure and are certain she will not be a stranger to Mac Street!

With Mrs. Seff’s departure, we welcome Mrs. Wendy Tangey to the team. Mrs. Tangey will be teaching PE, Auslan, Art, and tutoring. She brings a wealth of knowledge to our school, and her vibrant and energetic nature has already been a hit with the students. If you see Mrs. T in the yard, please give her a warm welcome to our amazing school community.

Building Works
Over the school holidays, several projects have taken place to enhance our learning spaces. All classrooms have been freshly painted, and new flooring has been installed, creating vibrant learning environments. The excitement was evident as students walked through the doors on day one!

Additionally, the ITTC has relocated to Gov Hub down the road, allowing us to convert those spaces back into classrooms—an exciting development as our enrolment numbers continue to grow. Lastly, we have installed 16 security cameras around the school to provide additional security for our wonderful building outside of school hours.

Uniform
It has been wonderful to see our students wearing the correct uniform. However, we are aware that uniform stock has been a challenge for our supplier, and we have raised this issue with the company. If you are waiting on uniform items that are preventing your child from being in full school uniform, please inform their classroom teacher or the school office.

Attendance
Regular attendance is essential for your child’s success. Unexplained absences can result in missed valuable learning opportunities. If your child is unwell and unable to attend school, please notify their class teacher with a note or contact the school office.
With our structured approach to teaching and learning, lessons begin promptly at 9:00 AM, with Literacy as the first session each day. Arriving on time ensures that your child starts the day with their peers and maximizes their learning opportunities.

Athletics Carnival
Students have begun training for our upcoming Athletics Carnival, which will be held at school on Friday, March 7. Please mark this in your diary - we would love to see you there!

Fundraiser
On Saturday, March 1, we will be hosting a sausage sizzle at Bunnings Ballarat on Creswick Rd. We would love to see as many community members as possible supporting our school by purchasing a sausage or drink.

It has been a fantastic start to the school year!
Have a great weekend.

Foundation News - Mrs Emily Burns

Wow! What a wonderful week and a bit we have had in Foundation! Our lovely little cherubs have begun to experience many aspects of school life, including specialist subjects like Art, STEM, Auslan and P.E.

It has been beautiful to witness their smiles and excitement after experiencing a new subject. Each day this week we have been practicing our classroom behaviour expectations, including lining up and walking around the school properly, and things like sitting and listening to the teacher while in the classroom. I am proud of the resilience I am seeing each day from students when they are saying goodbye to their families in the morning. Well done to all families on Week 2 of learning!

Grade 1 News - Mrs Tanya Vanderkley

The Grade 1 students of 2025 have made a wonderful start to their learning! It has been an exciting first week filled with Literacy, Numeracy, Knowledge and all of our wonderful specialist subjects!

This week in Knowledge, students learned about explorers, how maps have changed over time, and European voyages for new lands and spices. Hands-on activities sparked curiosity about exploration and discoveries.

It has been a fantastic start to the year, and we look forward to many more weeks of learning!

GRADE 2 NEWS – Miss Rhiannon Eustice

Grade 2 have had a wonderful start to the school year. Our grade successfully completed 3 days of the Ready to Learn program and are showing excellent learning behaviours throughout the school day. Students have settled into their daily routines and having been pushing themselves by completing a maths assessment in the second week!

In Reading, this term students are learning about Aesop's fables and what lessons can be learnt from each story. Our Knowledge unit also is looking at exploration and the early mapping of Australia. This compliments our learning done on Australia and it's discovery by Captain Cook last year. I am looking forward to teaching the Grade 2's this year. What a fantastic start you have all had!

GRADE 3/4 NEWS – Mr Andrew Goodson

What an amazing start to the year we have had in the 3/4 room! Learning has kicked-off and we are well and truly underway with our year.

With new carpets, a new smartboard and freshly painted walls, our classroom not only looks brand new but has a great vibe within the four walls.

GRADE 5/6 NEWS – Mrs Bonnie Irving

What a wonderful fortnight we have had in the 5/6 classroom! I would like to start by congratulating all of our students on a great start to the term. This week we have been taking our time to settle into routines as well as exploring some new learning.

Our class novel this term is The Night they Stormed Eureka and it has already sparked some great conversation amongst our students. All students have begun to take home their readers and are showing great responsibility in getting them signed off each night, keep up the great work Grade 5/6!

Importance of Using School Crossings for Student Safety

As students head to school in the morning and return home in the afternoon, safety should always be the top priority. Using the designated school crossing is crucial for ensuring the safety of children and preventing accidents. School crossings are specifically designed to provide a safe space for pedestrians to cross busy roads. Our crossings on Macarthur Street and Doveton Street are monitored by crossing guards between the following hours 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm. Our crossing guards help guide children, alert drivers, and ensure that traffic is stopped while students cross. Failing to use these crossings, whether by jaywalking or crossing at unmarked areas, increases the risk of accidents. Vehicles may not be prepared to stop for children outside of designated zones, leading to potential danger. By following the rules and using the designated crossings, students and parents can significantly reduce the chances of accidents and make the school commute safer for everyone. Let’s all do our part to keep our kids safe!
