As we move through Week 8 of Term 4, it’s hard to believe December is already upon us. It has been an incredibly busy fortnight, but our students continue to finish the year with enthusiasm and determination.
Grade 1/2 Sleepover and Foundation Late Night Stay
This week in Foundation we have been settling back into structured learning after two weeks of assessment. Students have been listening to the text “Crunch the Crocodile” in anticipation of our excursion to the Ballarat Wildlife Park next week!
In Writing we have been working hard to write a retell about the story, and deepening our understanding of the conjunction “when”
We have loved our knowledge lessons this week, learning about native Australian animals and making a platypus craft and completing a guided drawing of a crocodile!
In the Grade 1 classroom the last fortnight we have been learning the traditional Australian song ‘Waltzing Matilda’.
Students have learnt what a jumbuck is, what a ‘billy’ is and what a tucker bag is. The students have absolutely loved it.
This week students have settled back into their routines after finishing their end of year assessment. I am so proud of all their efforts this year towards their learning, there has been lots of growth across the board!
The Grade 2's have finished reading our class novel... Fantastic Mr Fox and ended the week off by watching the movie at the Grade 1/2 Sleepover. It was a great book to read as a class and the students loved analysing how the author created suspense through characters words and actions.
On Tuesday, the 3/4 class went to Earth Ed to explore the concept of sustainability and the impacts that we have on the world around us. Our initial discussion with our teachers for the day – Rachael and Emma – was about the world and ways in which we can help to ensure that the planet remains healthy, not only in our time but in generations to come. From here, we delved back into a bit of our learning from term three where we spoke about the subject of renewable energy options, as well as transport, water, food, waste and green spaces.
Whilst this was engaging, the REALLY fun bit was being able to design and then build our own city of the future incorporating smart options which would be good for the Earth. Using Lego (in many colours, shapes and sizes), we were able to achieve this. Working in pairs, we used our creativity and imagination to build a sustainable city of the future.
The day was amazingly fun; we all had a blast!
This fortnight we have continued our studies of Asia. We have looked at China, Afghanistan and India. Recently we looked at traditional clothing for each country. We made some paper dolls in their traditional dress. We have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the similarities and differences that make each of these countries unique.
Earlier this year we studied the Hiroshima bombing and the effects on the people of Hiroshima, including a young girl called Sadako. After reading Sadako and the thousand paper cranes we have been hard at work trying to create our own thousand paper cranes. I am happy to report, so far we have made 824 cranes as a class! Only 176 to go!
