Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
It has been another busy and productive fortnight as we continue to move swiftly through the term. It’s been lovely to see some sunshine breaking through, even if it’s been mixed with colder, windier days.
This week we have been learning all about the sun and its role in our solar system. We have learned that it is made up of dust and gas and can fit 1.3 billion earths inside it! In Literacy we have been adding adverbs and adjectives to our sentences, learning vocabulary such as ‘core’, ‘gravity’, ‘dense’ and their meanings, while using these words in a sentence.
In Maths we are consolidating our understanding of take away/minus. It’s been a cold week with a few wet weather timetables – but we got to give our grass heads we made in STEM a haircut!
Another fortnight done and dusted in the Grade One classroom! The absolute highlight - and perhaps the most memorable event of the year so far - was the arrival of our very first chick. The children (and I 😊) were SUPER EXCITED to witness the hatching process and proudly named our new fluffy friend “Little T”. Even more excitement is on the way, as many of the other eggs are beginning to crack and show signs of hatching.
In our knowledge lessons, we have continued our understanding of insects and their fascinating behaviours. Did you know that male spiders sometimes give female spiders a dead fly as a gift!!!
Mathematics has also been full of hands-on learning. With the beautiful weather we enjoyed last week, we took our lessons outside and explored concepts of measurement and capacity. The children loved working in pairs and groups, measuring objects in their environment and comparing capacities.
Bring on Week 7!
Exciting times in Grade 2 this week! We have welcomed the hatching of our baby chicks. After waiting 21 days (approximately) during incubation, the embryo inside the egg developed, growing its heart, blood vessels, and other body parts, including feathers.
Tuesday and Wednesday the chicks were strong enough to bust out of the shells and into an excited room of children. It's been wonderful for the students to witness part of an animal’s lifecycle in our very own class! Cuddling the cute, fluffy, baby chicks was also a bonus.
Over the past couple of weeks in the 3/4 room, we have begun our learning about resources. Resources are the things we use from the Earth to live, grow and make products. Some resources are renewable which means they can be replaced or used again, like sunlight, wind, trees and water. These resources will not run out if people use them wisely.
Other resources are non-renewable which means they cannot be replaced once they are gone. Examples of non-renewable resources include coal, oil and natural gas. People need to be careful with non-renewable resources because they take a long time to form, and once used up, they are gone forever.
Last week was a busy one in Grade 5/6.
On Wednesday we had Alan Irving come to talk to us about wastewater treatment. He told us the process of how water is treated, what they do with the water once it is treated and a few funny stories about things that have been found at the treatment plant. It was a very informative session and a great way to kick off our unit of work around Earth’s resources.
On Friday we had a dress up day for book week. It was fantastic to see so many Grade 5/6 students participating.
Next week we farewell 10 of our Grade 5/6 students as they head off to Somers Camp for 10 days. We know you will all have a wonderful time making new friends and participating in a range of fun activities!
