Principals Report

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,

Welcome Back to Term 3!

Welcome back to another exciting term of learning. It’s been wonderful to see so many happy faces returning to school, and we’re sure many parents and carers were just as glad to resume the school routine! Our students have quickly settled back into learning and have been enjoying reconnecting with friends during playtimes.

Swimming

Week One was a busy one, as we dived straight into our swimming program. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and smiling faces of our students as they embraced the water. As we all know, swimming is an essential life skill in Australia, and we thank all families for supporting their children to be prepared each day.

Building Works

Over the school holidays, 12 windows at the front of the school were replaced. Several trades worked diligently to ensure the project progressed well before students returned. The new windows look fantastic, and the works are nearing completion. This term, we move into the final stage, Stage 3, which will involve relocating a few classrooms. Please be assured that this will not impact student learning.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN results have now been released, and we are incredibly proud of the effort demonstrated by all our students. NAPLAN provides a snapshot of your child’s literacy and numeracy skills at a particular point in time. It can be a helpful tool for identifying areas of strength and areas for growth, both for individual students and across the school. We encourage you to view these results as just one part of your child’s broader learning journey. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s progress, please don’t hesitate to contact their teacher.

School Pick-Up and Drop-Off

The beginning and end of the school day can be busy times. Please note that our gates open at 8:00am and 3:10pm and are locked at 9:00am and 3:30pm. If parents are staying for a chat at the end of the day, we ask that students play safely in the yard until the gates are locked at 3:30pm.

2026 Foundation Enrolments

We’re already receiving a steady stream of enrolments for the 2026 school year. If you, or someone you know, has a child who will be starting Foundation in 2026, please contact the school to book a tour and learn more about what we offer.

Later this semester, some of our Grade 5/6 students will visit Soldiers Hill Kindergarten to help with the transition to school. Our senior students will speak to the kinder children about what school is like and answer the many questions they’re sure to have.

We’re looking forward to another fantastic term ahead.

Principal

Foundation News - Mrs Emily Burns

We made it to Term 3! We have had a wonderful start to the term, last week we embarked on swimming lessons which were a great success! This week we are settling back into a full routine with specialist classes. In Reading and Knowledge, we are beginning a unit about Seasons and Weather which across the term will develop into learning a little about the Earth and Night and Day.

In Writing, we are beginning to write into our writing books and complete sentence stems by using the conjunction ‘and’. In Numeracy, we are adding 1, and then adding 2 by holding a number in our hand/head and then counting on to the next number/s. We celebrated 100 days of school this week, and it was beautiful to see all our little people look like they were 100 years old!

Grade 1 News - Mrs Tanya Vanderkley

Welcome Back to Our Grade One Students!

What an incredible start to the term! Our first week was full of excitement with daily swimming sessions. The students were amazing, showing impeccable behaviour and resilience, even though the busy schedule left them quite tired.

As we move into Week 2, our learners have been exploring the /er/ sound and its various spellings (er, or, ir, ur) through our Sounds-Write program. They are also extending their punctuation skills by learning how to use commas to separate items in a list and to organise multiple ideas within a sentence.

In our knowledge unit, we are revisiting  last year’s learning about the Earth and its seasons and taking it a step further. This week, the students are thrilled to begin planting seeds and observing closely as they grow into plants. This hands-on experience is sure to spark curiosity and wonder!

As always, thank you for your ongoing support - it makes a world of difference to our students’ learning journey

GRADE 2 NEWS – Miss Rhiannon Eustice

What an eventful start to the Term the Grade 2's have had with swimming. It was great to have everyone back at school again and see everyone's confidence increase in the water as they progressed through the week. This week has been a lot more settled and back into our usual routine. Students have been working hard learning new sound spellings and applying this when reading texts with expression during fluency.

A highlight of week 2 was learning about the life cycle of plants in knowledge time. The grade 2's looked at parts of a seed and have started the germination of broad beans in the class. It will be great to watch the beginning stage of the broad beans life cycle.

GRADE 3/4 NEWS – Mr Andrew Goodson

Fluency is one of the vital cogs in our daily morning literacy machine. It gives us the chance to read a text with a specific focus – typically around the knowledge focus (which flows into most other aspects of learning).

During a typical fluency session, ‘Partner A’ reads to ‘Partner B’ for two minutes, with Partner B following along as Partner A reads. Partner B then provides some feedback about how Partner A did in their two minutes of reading. The roles then reverse. During each of these sessions, there is a ‘Fluency Checklist’ on the board to remind students about what fluency looks like and sounds like; this provides a basis for providing feedback.

With the learning focus being ‘Weather and Climate’ for the first portion of the term, over the first two weeks we have read about The Water Cycle and Wind.

Be sure to have a chat with your child about what they are learning (and indeed reading) about.

GRADE 5/6 NEWS – Mrs Bonnie Irving

We have had a wonderful start to the term in Grade 5/6. This term we are reading a class novel based on the Black Saturday Bushfires called 47 degrees.

For the next 6 weeks we will have Lachie joining us in 5/6 to complete his final placement before completing his teaching degree. We are looking forward to having Lachie share his knowledge with us all.

SPECIALIST NEWS

Physical Education News:
After a successful swimming program where students practiced and refined their swimming awareness, stroke technique and personal survival skills we have returned to class timetabled Physical Education classes.

This Term we are kicking off with our Gym Fun and Gym Skills units. Students will be learning basic gymnastic skills and learning to put movements into a floor routine for assessment.

Could students on the days they have Physical Education wear their navy trackpants, polo shirts, jumpers and runners so that they are able to move freely and comfortable.

In the Art Room:
During the school holidays many celebrated NAIDOC Week. So in recognition of this event, we have been exploring indigenous artists and their use of patterns, colour and shapes to capture ‘Country’. You will be able to see student work on display in the next few weeks once projects have been completed.

School Zone

As we settle back into school routine, we would like to take a moment to remind everyone about the importance of being mindful when parking and driving around the school. As we work together to keep our community safe, please take note of the following guidelines:

-Driving Slow and Cautiously: As always, please drive slowly around the school grounds. Children and families are often walking in the area, and it’s important to stay alert.

- Parking: Please make sure to park in designated spaces only. Avoid parking in areas that could block traffic flow or create safety hazards for students and staff. At the Armstrong Street gates, there is a designated space for emergency vehicles and taxis, there are signs showing where you cannot park - please refrain from using these spaces.

-Care with Car Doors: When opening your car door, be sure to do so carefully to avoid hitting neighbouring vehicles. A small moment of extra caution can prevent costly damage and help maintain a friendly and respectful environment.

We appreciate your attention to this matter and your cooperation in ensuring a safe environment for all our students and families.
