Principals Report

Dear Parents, Carers and Community members,

Term 3
Another Term has quickly come to a close, the last 10 weeks have been incredibly busy, but filled with lots of learning and fun. There have been several highlights from the term, excursions to Ballarat Gym Sports & Science Works, incursions where we had ARDOCH Buddies visit grade 5/6 students, Ascent shoe tying lessons, responsible pet ownership for our junior students. As always, our students enjoyed dress up days for the 100 days of school celebration and book week. We also welcomed our special guests in for our Father’s Day morning.

Term 4
Just like Term 3, Term 4 is going to be an extremely busy Term. We will continue to work with our educational consultant Greg Clement as we consolidate our shift in instructional practice to a highly structured and explicit teaching approach. Greg is excited to be meeting the students in our school, he has heard a lot about them and has been following the progress from afar. Our Grade 6 students will be visiting the Soldier’s Hill kinder for four sessions. We hope to make the transition to school far easier by having students take part in Q&A with the kinder kids, our students will explain all the ins and outs of a school day. Our whole school will be off to the Ballarat Observatory as we are learning about Earth and Space in Term 4. Our Grade 3-6 students will be off to our ‘bush’ camp at Log Cabin Camp in Creswick and to think we are already busy enough we will add a school concert as well.

Hats
As we are a SunSmart School, students are expected to wear broad brimmed hat that features our school logo from the beginning of Term 4. Please have these ready for use in Term 4 with student names on them. We do have some for sale at the front office for $15.00.

The Writing Revolution
In Term 4, teaching staff will begin our training in the Writing Revolution. The Writing Revolution is a research-based method that focuses on teaching writing skills systematically to improve students’ thinking, reading, and communication abilities.

What is The Writing Revolution?
TWR emphasises the connection between writing and critical thinking. By breaking down the writing process into clear, manageable steps, we teach students how to organise their thoughts, develop clear and compelling arguments, and express themselves more effectively.

Why is this important?
Strong writing skills are essential across all subjects, not just in Literacy. Whether it’s explaining a math problem, summarising a science experiment, or reflecting on a historical event, writing helps students deepen their understanding and communicate their knowledge.

How does it work?
TWR focuses on:

  • Sentence-Level Instruction: Teaching students to construct well-formed sentences, a crucial foundation for strong writing.
  • Paragraph Building: Encouraging students to organize their thoughts into clear, structured paragraphs.
  • Writing Across Content Areas: Applying writing techniques in all subjects to improve understanding and expression.

We are excited about the impact this will have on student learning and look forward to sharing more as we see growth in our students' writing abilities!

Building Works
Over the school holidays, we will see our Art Room’s makeover complete. Flooring, painting and cabinetry will be complete – the space will look brand new! Our office area will also be freshly painted and have new carpet installed; we can’t wait for everyone to see how beautiful our school will look.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our families and community members for all your support over the duration of this term. We hope you and your family have a wonderful break and come back to school in Term 4 refreshed and ready to finish the year strongly.

Foundation News - Mrs Emily Burns

We made it to the last week of term 3! Our beautiful Foundation treasures have made so much growth over the last 10 weeks, it really is wonderful to watch them grow and demonstrate their understanding in all areas of school! In Reading this week students have been consolidating their understanding of two letters making one sound on the end of words. In Writing students have been using the conjunction ‘because’ in a sentence to explain why something is happening. This week in Maths has been a catch-up week where we are re-teaching the topic of ‘differences and totals’.

For our core knowledge work this week students have been making their own Great Barrier Reef - these look amazing! I’m sure they will be so excited to show you once they are complete.

Grade 1/2 News - Miss Rhiannon Eustice

It's hard to believe that Term 3 is coming to an end. The Grade 1/2's have worked so hard this term in all areas. I have seen a big shift in the students oral reading, many using punctuation and expression as they read a text. Their math skills are greatly improving, students are getting really good at their times 5 times tables.

In knowledge the students really did shine, represting their states and territories. Keep an eye out as we will post the video for you to watch online. Parents if you would like a copy, send in a USB stick next term and I can download it for you. Have a much deserved break, and see you next term!

Grade 3/4 News - Mr Andrew Goodson

This term, the 3/4 class has taken a virtual tour of the Amazon. We have undertaken a great deal of learning and have discovered many facts about this vast, fascinating place. Some of the things we have learnt about include:

  • The Amazon River, smaller rivers and their tributaries
  • The Andes Mountains
  • Animals & wildlife
  • People and Tribes
  • Vegetation
  • Threats
  • Deforestation
  • Food and Medicine
  • Explorers
  • Some countries in/around the Amazon Basin

We have all enjoyed learning about the Amazon this term and have taken a lot from it.

Grade 5/6 News - Mrs Sharon Smith-Francis

Grade 5/6S have been studying the flags of the European countries.

We investigated the symbolism of the designs in the flags.

We then designed our own flag for our made-up country ensuring we used symbolism too.

Division Athletics - 12/9/24

On September 12, Braxten, Aleah, and Andes represented our school at the Sovereign and Eureka Division Track and Field Championships. Braxten excelled in Shot Put, earning 1st place, while Aleah achieved 3rd in High Jump, and Andes finished 5th in Hurdles. Congratulations to all three students - progressing to Division Athletics is a massive achievement!

Braxten will advance to represent our school in the next round of championships in October.
